If you are experiencing Sciatic Nerve Pain, people would recommend hot or cold compress. This is not always effective because the relief should be based on the symptoms of the problem. This is considered as a misconception of some people who suffers from this problem. A sharp pain with swelling can tell you that there is inflammation in the area. Ice compress will be effective. Heat compress is better if there is stiffness or mild soreness.

In case you felt a Sciatic Pain, observe it for two days before applying heat. Avoid it completely because there are times when the inflammation would increase because of this. It maybe good for awhile but it can worsen the pain. This is attested by people who suffered this for years. Doctors would advice you to use ice pack to minimize the swelling and inflammation. Ice is actually the best in curing inflammation. It could sometimes provide long term relief.

It is best to apply the ice or heat pack with a cloth or towel. This is to avoid damaging the skin from the temparature. There are topical medications that can be bought over the counter if the heat or ice causes irritation. It is advisable to do the compress every two hours so the skin would go back to normal temperature. Twenty minutes is the ideal time for this. If you are suffering diabetes or other condition, it is best to consult the doctor before using this treatment. Remember the sciatic pain is under control.
